Ja och nej. Våra hårda ballistiska skydd stoppar alla typer av hugg -både kniv, syl och yxa. Vad gäller mjuka skydd (soft armor) så krävs en speciell panelkonstruktion för att nå upp till en knivskyddsklassning enligt ex. NIJ 0115.00 eller HOSDB.
Stickskyddsklassningarna har högt ställda krav och kan innebära flera typer av blad, samt även syl, som huggs mot panelen i olika vinklar. En mjuk skyddsväst med endast skottskyddsklassning klarar inte ett sådant test även om prestationen mot ett knivblad i verkligheten skulle vara relativt god.

Plate carriers, bulletproof vests and ballistic shields are excellent tools and all have their place. However, as a civilian it might be difficult to use body armor all day in your daily life. And carrying around a ballistic shield would probably make you look wierd. That is where our backpack/bag armor plates come into play!
An armor panel placed inside your backpack or briefcase is invisible and makes for the perfect everyday armor. An instinctive reaction when beeing attacked is to lift your arms in front of you to protect the head and vital organs. AR500 steel is not a brand name or a specific product but a broad term for a type of through hardened and wear resistant steel. AR is short for Abrasion Resistant and 500 refers to the Brinell hardness of the steel. 500 is a common hardness category but abrasion resistant steels are available in several different hardness categories. A higher Brinell Hardness Number means a harder steel. AR500 is harder than AR400 and so on.
Abrasion resistant steels can withstand mechanical wear much better than conventional high-strengh steel. The most common use for AR500 steels is heavy duty equipment that is subjected to a high degree of mechanical wear like excavators and attachments, dumpers, truck bodies, in mining etc.
A common misconception is that regular AR500 wear plate steel and ballistic protection steel/armor steel is exactly the same thing. They do have similarities in properties and hardness levels, but they are made for vastly different applications and differ in performance, tolerances and quality control.
Different manufacturers use different recipes for their steel, and also different methods for quenching and tempering. Because of this the characteristics and performance of AR steel from different manufacturers can vary widely even if the brinell hardness is identical. Depending on the application this difference in performance will be more or less noticable and significant. When it comes to ballistic protection applications even very small differences or variations in characteristics and performance can be a matter of life and death. The main takaway is to remember that "AR500" is a very non-specific description.
Any steel manufacturer can make hard steel. The difficulty is making hard steel that is also flexible. High quality protection steel needs to combine a very high hardness with toughness to give it bending properties and make it withstand the force from projectiles without cracking. A high toughness relative to the hardness is the only way to safely lower the weight in armor applications. And this is an art that only a small number of manufacturers in the world master fully. So the most noticable difference between decent armor steel and top of the line armor steel is the weight at a specific protection level.
So a top of the line protection steel need to have unique properties of extreme hardness AND being flexible at the same time. But this is not enough. Protection steel must also have an extremely consistant quality, minimal size and hardness tolerances and rigid quality control (which might include ballistic testing of every single production batch) to avoid the risk of significant differences in performance from batch to batch. Unlike many other applications where one would just add some extra thickness as a safety margin, that is not an option in armor applications due to the added weight.
Real ballistic protection steel from the best manufacturers in the world is very expensive. Much more expensive than some random AR500 steel. For this reason it is not uncommon that civilian body armor is made of cheap wear plate type AR steel instead of certified high end military grade protection steel.

Although soft armor materials had long been experimented with, it was not until the 1970s that effective soft body armor became widely available. Several companies had done plenty of research on soft armor materials but the american company DuPont ™ took the lead with a newly developed para-aramid fiber which was given the brand name Kevlar®. Kevlar quickly made a big impact and was used by both the US military and police departments.
A similar para-aramid fiber, developed in the 1970s by Akzo ™ and named Twaron®, was launched in 1986. (Twaron is today owned by Teijin Aramid).
In 1990, DSM released a polyethylene-based ballistic fiber under the Dyneema® brand. Dyneema is not a para-aramid but a so-called ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Dyneema was discovered as early as the 1960s but underwent a long period of development before it was ready for the market.
Para-aramid and UHMWPE are still the technologies that dominate in the production of soft body armour, but there are now many more manufacturers. On the one hand, there are a number of companies that manufacture their own variants of para-aramid and UHMWPE under their own brands, and on the other hand, a lot of Chinese-made ditto of inferior quality is produced and sold cheaply and without any brand name. Honeywell with its very well regarded Spectra Shield and Gold Shield product lines and ongoing research and developmen is an example of the former and a very serious contender against the older brands. Both Kevlar, Twaron and Dyneema remain among the most vibrant brands and the owner companies continue to develop new variants of the products. The fiber material can e.g. be woven or laminated with different techniques, different densities and combinations.
In contrast to the 1970s, Kevlar is today just a brand among many others. Because Kevlar was the first successful brand and for a long time dominated the American market, the name became synonymous with soft ballistic protection.
The question in the title is thus a question that we get regularly and with "Kevlar" the questioner usually refers to soft body armour in general and not a specific brand. Sometimes, however, the question refers to aramid and in rare cases, the Kevlar brand is actually referred to. It may therefore take a while to find out what the questioner means. But we have to rejoice in Kevlar®, which has managed to achieve the same status as Kleenex®, Aspirin®, Post-it® and a handful of other successful brands that have become synonymous with a product.
So which material is the best? We have chosen to primarily sell soft armor made with materials from Honeywell and Teijin. All manufacturers and sellers want to emphasize their own product, but the truth is that it is more important to choose a well-known brand than which brand you choose. By buying armour from a well-known brand such as Twaron, Dyneema, Kevlar or Goldshield, you get predictability regarding classification, performance, durability during the warranty period, etc.
If you buy armour of unknown origin, the actual classification is unknown, the material may be uneven in quality and pass one test but not another, the material may be affected abnormally much by use, and so on. Predictability is a must when it comes to products that is supposed to protect lives.
In terms of practical differences between the materials, Goldshield, Twaron® and Kevlar® (para-aramid) are often softer and more comfortable than Dyneema® (UHMWPE). The ballistic ability and knife protection ability are equivalent at a given level of protection, while UHMWPE has slightly better stab protection in relation to its panel weight.
Our recommendation is to stick to well-known quality brands and choose a reliable dealer, even if this is more expensive compared to buying a cheap vest of an unknown brand. Click here to see our range of bulletproof vests.
Ballistic shields are usually made of fiber materials such as UHMWPE, and models with the highest levels of protection commonly have an outer layer of hard ceramic. Shields of good quality cost on average €1500-4000. Although ballistic shields can stop bullets, they are easy to inadvertently damage. The surface that protects the fiber material can easily be scratched and a ceramic shield may sometimes crack only by e.g. setting it down too hard against the ground. Most ballistic shields has a limited service life with a protection level warranty period of 5-7 years.
To remedy the problems mentioned above and make ballistic shields available to more users, TYR Protection has designed a shield series with a core made of top of the line ballistic steel instead of fiber and ceramic. The result is durable and insensitive shields with no shelf life but still a ballistic performance that surpasses traditional shields with the same protection level.
Our shields are recommended to law enforcement, car patrolling security personnel / security guards, ambulance services, schools as well as to civilians who work or live in high crime areas. A ballistic shield protect not only against bullets but also against knife or axe attacks, fragments etc.
Our shield models have such a thin profile that they can be placed between the seat and the door in many cars and they are not damaged by bouncing around in the trunk. Compared to a bulletproof vest, a shield has a clearly larger protection area and may give cover for both the upper body and the head. Unlike a bulletproof vest or plate carrier a shield may also be used to protect someone else or as a offensive tool against an attacker.

Soft bulletproof vests with protection level NIJ IIIA or equivalent are the most common type of body armor vest for civilian as well as professional users. Soft body armor vests are made of para-aramid or UHMWPE fiber and common brand names on the fiber material are Twaron®, Kevlar® and. Dyneema®.
Soft body armor is good at stopping traditional lead-core pistol and revolver bullets that are relatively soft and deforms upon impact. However, a bulletproof vest of soft armor is NOT good at stopping hard bullets such as certain types of steel jackeded or steel core pistol ammunition.
For example steel core 9mm ammo has been manufactured on a large scale in several European countries and is a common threat in certain places. Handgun ammo with very high velocity like 7,62x25 and 5,7x28 are also good at penetrating soft body armor.
In the video below, you can see a demonstration of how ineffective a soft armor bulletproof vest is against steel core pistol ammunition.
Bulletproof vests with soft armor panels are also incapable of stopping rifle bullets -even at long distances. In the video below this is demonstrated with a bulletproof vest that is shot at from a distance of over 270 meters. One of the calibers used in the video is 7.62x39 (AK-47) which is commonly used by criminals all over Europe.
A soft armor bulletproof vest is a light and comfortable basic protection that often provides a large protection area, but our recommendation is that you upgrade your armor kit with hard body armor plates as well to deal with the shortcomings described above. Hard body armor plates are usually made of ceramic and PE or ballistic steel. Due to the design they can offer a much higher level of protection compared to soft armor.
An alternative is to invest in a plate carrier type vest that only carry hard armour plates. If using slim hard armor plates a plate carrier can be worn concealed. Tyr Protection offer several very slim steel core hard armor plates. In particular the multi-curved plates are great for concealment.
All bulletproof vests and body armor from TYR Protection are made with carefully selected raw materials from the industry's leading manufacturers. All products have also undergone ballistic testing at an internationally recognized laboratory in accordance with the latest NIJ standards, and we perform our own in-house tests on each new batch to ensure a consistent and high quality.
Ballistic tests are expensive and quality control is a ongoing cost for us. Using exclusively quality raw materials increases safety considerably but also entails extra costs. Because of this we do not have the lowest prices in the industry, but we sell products that we are proud of and as a customer of Tyr Protection you can be sure of getting what you pay for. Unfortunately, the opposite is often the case in this industry where far too many people take dangerous shortcuts to save money.
A large part of the bulletproof vests and other body armor products available on the market are made in China. The quality varies and the performance is often unreliable as almost all manufacturers use cheap raw materials and / or ignore safety margins to save money by using a smaller amount of ballistic material.
Our experience is that it is more the rule than the exception that bulletproof vests that are sold cheaply via various marketplaces on the internet does NOT have the protection level stated by the seller, and are not tested in accordance with the ballistic standard as stated in the product description. The cheapest body armor sold on the internet are death traps and pure scam as they do not perform even close to the protection level they claim to have.
We have seen cases where even large and well-established asian companies lie about the protection level of their products and refer to ballistic tests which on examination turn out to be completely incorrectly performed or not performed at all. When the armor is tested according to the claimed protection level it usually fails. In the first video below, you can see one such a test that we have performed on a bulletproof vest panel from a well-known chinese manufacturer. Strike number 5 is a complete penetration and would have been lethal.
When it comes to products that are supposed to protect lives, there is no room for quality deficiencies. As with motorcycle helmets, parachutes and climbing ropes, a bulletproof vest must perform exactly according to its specified protection level every day throughout the warranty period. Failure to protect inevitably results in very serious injury or death.
The saying "You get what you pay for" certainly applies to bulletproof vests and body armor and there is no shortcut. You do not have to buy the most expensive ballistic gear on the market, but we strongly recommend that you invest in body armour made of well-known brand materials. The YouTube channel Demolition Ranch has made a couple of videos where Chinese body armor is demonstrated. Only one of the products in the video performs in the vicinity of the stated classification, and this armor panel also had a clearly higher price. (Fast forward until 1:14 to skip the intro).
When handled correctly, our soft bulletproof vests / protection panels made of Twaron®, as well as our ceramic plates, have a 5-year warranty regarding their protection level. Our bulletproof vests with steel core body armor plates have a theoretically infinite shelf life. The lack of shelf life makes steel core body armor by far the cheapest option over time.
All bulletproof products with the exception of steel core armor has a specified shelf life which is usually 5-7 years. Even hard ceramic armor have a specified warranty period because the ceramic is glued to a back of fiber (often UHMWPE). Frequent use, humidity, UV radiation and extreme temperatures are factors that can negatively affect fiber-based bulletproof products.
The warranty period means that the protection during this entire period must reach the requirements set by the ballistic standard -for example the NIJ Standard 0101.06. However, this does not mean that a bulletproff vest och armor plate suddenly loses all its protective capacity after 5 years, but that the manufacturer no longer can guarantee that the product meets the requirements of the test standard. Professional users like police and military replace their bulletproof gear when the warranty period is expired.
A widespread experience among users is that quality products from established brands such as Twaron®, Kevlar® and Dyneema® does not degrade in some dramatic way by time alone - provided that the product is stored correctly and has an intact sealing on the protective cover.
If a bulletproof vest or body armor plate is used sparingly and stored at room temperature in a dry and dark location like a wardrobe, our experience and that of many others is that they seem to retain a surprisingly good protective capacity long after the warranty period has expired. With that said, we do NOT encourage anyone to use body armor after expiration of the warranty period.
